Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane / Avobenzone is a synthetic sunscreen filter used in skin care to protect against damage from UVA light. Other ingredients in the class of synthetic filters include bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, ethylhexyl salicylate, ethylhexyl triazone, homosalate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene and triazine diethyl butamidotriazone.
Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (aka Avobenzone) is a synthetic/chemical sunscreen filter, and currently the only one to be approved globally for UVA protection (due to extremely limiting and lengthy FDA approval process on new sunscreen ingredients).
Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane protects against the entire UVA range, 310-400 nm, making it a great ingredient to work in combination with other, more widely available, UVB filters. The problem with this is that is degrades very quickly in the presence of sunlight, and part of the reason for the guidance to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.
