Men’s grooming has come a long way from the days of using whichever soap happened to be lying around. By 2024, the global male grooming market is estimated to be worth about £70 billion [1].

It’s likely you’re looking for something to use on your skin - whether it’s a moisturiser, SPF or a shave balm. But with so many skincare brands out there, where do you begin?

Whether you're a grooming enthusiast or just starting your skincare journey, our aestheticians can help you maintain a skincare routine, adopt best practices for caring for your skin, and address some of the most common skin concerns men face.

Establishing a Skincare Routine

For those who are new to skincare, whatever your gender, finding the time to actually commit to a routine can feel overwhelming. Busy schedules, waking up early to sort out the kids or get out in time for the work commute…we get it. Here are our top tips on introducing a skincare routine and sticking to it:

Understand Your Skin Type:

Knowing your skin type is crucial for selecting the right products and treatments.

  • Oily skin: Look for oil-free and lightweight products with ingredients to control excess oil production.
  • Dry skin: Choose hydrating and nourishing products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides.
  • Combination skin: Use gentle products and focus on balancing oil production in the T-zone while providing hydration for drier areas.
  • Sensitive skin: Opt for fragrance-free and hypoallergenic (less likely to sensitise) products to minimise the risk of irritation.

Consistency is key:

  • Establish a daily skincare routine that works for you so long as it includes cleansing, toning, and moisturising in the morning and evening.
  • Cleanse your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and impurities. This can be in the shower if you have to, but make the water cooler before you submerge your face. We recommend washing your face separately as the water we shower in can be too hot for the skin on our face. It can end up stripping the skin, causing irritation and dryness in the long run.
  • Use a toner after cleansing to balance the skin's pH levels and prepare it for further product absorption.
  • Apply a moisturiser suitable for your skin type to keep it hydrated and protected throughout the day.
  • Finish with an SPF no matter whether you work indoors or outdoors. Trust us, it will keep you looking younger for longer, save your skin from pollutant damage not just sun damage, and soothe any irritation and redness.

Is a Man’s skin any different to a Woman’s?

Men's skin is different from women's skin in several ways. While the basic structure and function of the skin are similar, there are some noticeable differences which mean you may care for it slightly differently:

  1. Thickness: Men's skin is typically thicker than women's skin. The increased thickness is attributed to a higher collagen density and larger sebaceous glands. Thicker skin provides more natural protection against external factors.
  2. Oil Production: Men tend to have more active sebaceous glands, leading to increased oil production. This can make men more prone to oily skin, acne breakouts, and the appearance of larger pores.
  3. Collagen Density: Men's skin tends to age at a slower rate due to the higher collagen content, but they may experience a more sudden and noticeable decline in collagen production as they age.
  4. Hormonal Differences: Hormonal variations between men and women can affect the skin. Androgen hormones, such as testosterone, are more prevalent in men, leading to increased sebum production and a higher likelihood of acne.

While these differences exist, it's important to note that skincare principles, such as cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection, apply to all genders.

Addressing Common Skin Questions for Men

If you experience regular or consistent acne

Keep your skin clean and use products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to combat breakouts. Avoid picking or popping pimples to prevent scarring.

What to do about razor bumps and ingrown hairs

Exfoliate a day or two after shaving to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged hair follicles. Use a warm compress before shaving and consider using a single-blade razor or electric shaver.

Treatment for preventing early signs of ageing

Incorporate anti-ageing products with ingredients like retinol, peptides, and antioxidants to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Don't forget to use sunscreen daily to protect against UV damage.

Combating dark circles and puffiness

Get enough sleep, stay hydrated, and use eye creams or serums with ingredients like caffeine or hyaluronic acid to reduce puffiness and plump the under-eye area.

How to protect your skin from the sun

Sun protection is crucial for maintaining healthy skin and preventing premature ageing and skin damage. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it generously before going outside.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you're sweating or spending prolonged periods in the sun. Wear a hat and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your face and eyes.
