Optimise your routine for morning and night based on your skin type and goals
At Renude, we’re all about personalised skincare routines. Our experts will always curate both a morning and evening routine, ensuring each is designed to optimise the results of the other.
But why should our skincare routine differ from morning to evening? The needs of your skin vary throughout the day due to environmental factors, biological processes, and the body's natural rhythm. Tailoring and personalising your AM and PM skincare routines will allow you to target multiple goals and see effective results.
During the day the skin protects us from external aggressors such as UV, free radicals and pollution. Therefore, our daytime routines should be optimised to support that by using antioxidant-rich formulas, and sunscreen, daily.
During the night, the skin undergoes a process of repair, rejuvenation, and restoration. Rest allows the skin to focus on essential functions crucial for maintaining its health and appearance.
Antioxidants: In the morning, it's crucial to protect the skin from damage caused by UV rays, free radicals and pollution. Antioxidants, such as Vitamin C and E, help neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. Look for lightweight serums or creams containing these ingredients for morning use.
Hyaluronic Acid: A hydrating superstar, hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture in the skin, making it an excellent addition to your morning or evening routine (in fact we would encourage it to be used in both routines) but it also creates a smooth canvas for makeup application and keeps your skin looking plump and youthful throughout the day.
Peptides: Incorporating peptides into your morning routine can help stimulate collagen production, improving the skin's elasticity and minimising the appearance of fine lines. This ingredient can also be used in either AM or PM routines - or both!
Retinoids: Retinoids, such as retinol, are best used in the evening due to their photosensitivity. These powerful ingredients promote skin cell turnover, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and acne. Start with a lower concentration and gradually increase usage to avoid irritation.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs): AHAs, like glycolic acid, and BHAs, such as salicylic acid, are excellent exfoliants that should be used in the evening. They unclog pores, remove dead skin cells, and promote a smoother complexion.
Niacinamide: Ideal for evening use, niacinamide helps regulate oil production, reduces redness, and improves the skin's barrier function. Full disclosure, this can also be used in your morning routine but if you're using active ingredients like Vitamin C in the morning, Niacinamide may be best saved for the evening.
The significance of a morning and evening routine lies in its ability to address the intricate challenges that ageing skin faces throughout the day and night. The morning routine should centre on safeguarding the skin against environmental stressors and replenishing moisture. The evening routine should place emphasis on thorough cleansing, targeted treatments, and rejuvenating nourishment.
AM: In the morning, cleanse, you could apply a Vitamin C serum if suitable for your skin for its collagen-boosting benefits, and opt for a moisturiser enriched with peptides to support skin elasticity.
PM: Combat signs of ageing with a retinol serum or cream before bedtime. Follow with a nourishing night cream containing antioxidants and hyaluronic acid for deep hydration.
An effective morning and evening routine can significantly impact the management of acne. The morning routine should focus on oil control and protection against external aggressors. Whereas the evening routine should prioritise thorough cleansing, targeted treatments, and overnight repair to mitigate inflammation and foster skin rejuvenation.
AM: Start your morning routine with a gentle cleanser, followed by a non-comedogenic moisturiser. Incorporate a serum containing niacinamide to control oil and reduce inflammation.
PM: Combat acne with an evening regimen featuring a salicylic acid exfoliant to unclog pores. Follow up with a retinoid to target acne and encourage skin cell turnover.
During the day, your skin is exposed to various environmental stressors such as UV rays, pollution, and free radicals, making it particularly important for individuals with red or sensitive to have a personalised skincare routine that caters to their individual needs. We recommend protecting the skin during the day and allow your nighttime routine to soothe and repair the skin, focusing on it’s natural repair and regeneration processes.
AM: Find products containing ingredients like chamomile, aloe vera, or green tea extract to reduce redness and finish with a fragrance-free, broad-spectrum sunscreen with physical blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to minimise potential irritation.
PM: For sensitive skin opt for a cream cleanser and choose a barrier repair cream or balm with ceramides and fatty acids to strengthen the skin's protective barrier and prevent moisture loss.
Dry and dehydrated skin types are very sensitive to changes throughout the day therefore ensuring your skin is getting exactly the nutrients and protection it needs is vital when personalising your skincare routine. Too heavy during the day can lead to congestion and breakouts and not enough at night can exacerbate dryness.
AM: We recommend a creamy cleanser followed by products packed with Hyaluronic acid to attract and retain moisture and ceramides to nourish and hydrate dry skin. Think primarily about skin barrier support.
PM: For very dry skin opt for a cream cleanser to thoroughly cleanse the skin without over-drying it. Choose a rich night cream that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or plant oils to deeply hydrate the skin while you sleep.
