Azelaic acid is a fantastic multi-functional ingredient known to have many skin benefits. It is naturally present in grains and can be derived from these or produced synthetically for use in skincare.
Azelaic acid is often used to treat acne blemishes. It has several mechanisms within the skin to target acne-related symptoms. Firstly, it works as an anti-inflammatory to bring down any swelling around inflammatory lesions. Secondly, it has antibacterial properties which help to limit the growth of acne-causing bacteria. It also helps to regulate the skin’s natural exfoliation process, which can prevent pores becoming blocked and reduce the potential for future blemishes.
The research also shows azelaic acid to have an effect on fading hyperpigmentation. It does this through inhibiting the production of excess melanin (our skin’s pigment). Azelaic acid is often prescribed for rosacea, due to it’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial mechanisms which help to calm the associated redness to balance the skin.
Azelaic acid is non-sensitising and has fantastic skin tolerability, so can be incorporated into routines even for sensitive skin types at around 10% in concentration.
This water-based serum from Garden of Wisdom uses 12% of a derivative of azelaic acid known as potassium azeloyl diglycinate rather than the active itself (as it's notoriously difficult to formulate with and get a great texture). This derivative delivers all the amazing benefits of azelaic acid as well as hydrating the skin, so this is a fantastic product for the price.
