How a chatbot strategy can level up operational efficiency across your entire business

Written byPippa HarmanCo-Founder RenudeGoodbye to the era of the ‘dumb’ chatbot. It’s no longer a question of if interactive, AI-driven chat belongs in your beauty and skincare acquisition strategy, it’s a question of when.
Beauty is a high-intent, high-question category. On the shop floor, consultants have always been there, successfully guiding customers through the buying process. That expertise can finally now sit online. Static PDPs were never a credible substitute for an on-counter veteran with a stack of routines memorised, years of training and the ability to see skin with a two-way chat. Nothing beats a live, working knowledge of your customers.
McKinsey believes generative AI’s upside in beauty to be +1.4–2.3% of industry revenue this year alone; around $9-10 billion. And that’s not abstract or reserved only for the bigger players. It lands in the day-to-day for all of us: marketing, merchandising, search and paid media. So, it’s time to stop treating chatbots as cute add-ons and start treating them as serious revenue engines. Shopify’s Q1 2024 benchmarks show Health & Beauty converting at 1.6%, with Beauty & Skincare closer to 1.0%. But when an AI consult is engaged, such as Renude, brands report conversion rates of up to 13%, and average order value increases of +46%.
The question isn’t “should we?”, it’s “why haven’t we?” How does a one-click AI skincare consult, trained on millions of dermatologist- and aesthetician-backed data points plus years of live user input, slot into your acquisition mix?
Remember when Google used to show us keyword referrer logs? You could see exactly which search term dropped someone on your site. Those days are gone. But with Skin Chat insights, they’re basically back.
These insights give you the language customers actually use when they’re trying to tackle their skin goals. Think of it as a live intent feed. As marketers, we spend thousands on SEMrush and similar, which have become more guess than educated these days… Skin Chat gives you these insights beamed directly from your customer’s heads, into your data.
Start with your landing pages and PDPs. If your customers keep asking the same questions, this is your source for site optimisation. Rewrite the pages, tighten the copy, and answer the question properly. You’re not a dermatologist, but now you’ve effectively got one sitting in your team. When has this ever been possible until today?
Then plug the gaps. If users keep asking about fragrance, actives to avoid, or texture, that’s your edit queue. Blogs also stop being traffic dumps or low value slop. Instead of stuffing “Buy Now” buttons into them, let the consult close the sale. The blog does the pre-sell, the chatbot finishes the job.
Treat “Consult started” and “Recommendation received” as primary conversion events. Meta’s Health & Beauty benchmarks claim an average conversion rate of 2.48% and CAC of $22.39. Yes, you read that correctly. I don’t buy it either. Double it in your head and you’re probably closer to reality. Prospecting is supposedly $27.94 and retargeting $17.69. Maybe on a good Boxing Day. That’s the cost of a bounced click. The AI consult, however, stops that bounce and keeps customers moving forward. [3]
Make campaigns concern-driven. Pull the top anxieties from chat data. “Oily skin and acne scars.” “Pregnancy-safe retinol.” “Fragrance-free moisturiser.” Are you noticing trends? Stay ahead of the curve! Build ad sets around those specific questions and make the consult the promised destination. Your creative doesn’t have to fluff because the Skin Chat can pick up where the ad leaves off.
Push “Consult started” and “Recommendation received” into Meta and Google Ads as conversion signals. Build lookalikes from people who received a routine, not random PDP viewers. A 63% CVR lift takes that supposed $22.39 CAC down to about $13.74 for sessions that engage with the chatbot. Even if your CAC is closer to $70 than $22, the same 63% lift brings it down to ~$43. That’s a $27 saving per order, and that’s before you even touch CPCs. [3]
AI chat is not a gimmick, those days are long gone. Beauty consumers want clear, fast answers before they hand over their money and their scepticism increases with every new product that comes to market.
A truly AI-driven chatbot gives you accessible audience insights for better pages, holds ad traffic on site long enough to buy, and feeds higher intent signals back into Meta and Google. McKinsey’s $9-10 billion industry growth projection stops being theory when the consult becomes the default buying experience.
